About Thomas Michael Conner

Thomas Michael Conner BIO In his own words, more like Forrest Gump than a Renaissance Man. Thomas Michael Conner was born into a large Irish Catholic clan in Camden, New Jersey. He was known as Mickey back then. He sold snow cones from a block of ice on a wagon and aspired to be Roy Rogers. Later, the family moved to Lancaster Pennsylvania. And when he was twelve years old, his parents gave him an Argus C-3 camera for Christmas and that started his lifelong passion for photography. He wasn’t Thomas Michael Conner, fine art photographer, yet, but that would come years later. After high school, Tom returned to Camden, and his Uncle Vince got him a job at the New York Shipbuilding shipyard. He trained at Temple University in Philadelphia and later was invited to join the health physics (radiation protection) staff on the N.S. Savannah, the world’s first nuclear powered merchant ship. The Savannah toured the globe with aim of showing the world that the U.S. could use nuclear power for peaceful purposes. When the Savannah’s cruise ended (you can still see it anchored in Baltimore harbor), Tom moved to Michigan to work at the Enrico Fermi nuclear power plant in Monroe. A week after he arrived, there was a meltdown and he spent the next 5 years supervising the health physics aspects of the cleanup and restarting of the reactor. But his real love at the time was music and film. He founded and played guitar in Custer’s Last Band and tells the story of playing the Ark in Ann Arbor while it was still in a house on Hill Street and opening for Joni Mitchell at the Living End in Detroit. He built a recording studio in his basement in Monroe and produced two seminal albums: The Detroit Folk Scene and Michigan Rocks. Both reached legendary status in the world of music collectors. Later he moved into artist management and music publishing and worked on behalf of Brussel Sprout, Don Was, Billy Joe Shaver, and Mitch Ryder among others. Later, when most people are retired, friends persuaded Tom to share his photographs with the world. It all started with that Argus camera. As Thomas Michael Conner, he has produced many award winning photographs, each telling its own story.
